Abbott Laboratories sued Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., the world's largest generic-drug maker, to prevent it from marketing copies of the Zemplar kidney-disease treatment. Abbott and patent partner the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation contend Israel's Teva plans to begin selling a generic version of the injectable medicine, known chemically as paricalcitol, before three U.S. patents expire in 2018. Teva "actively reviews pharmaceutical patents and seeks opportunities to challenge those patents,

When health problems kept guitarist Mike Thole from going on the road, the Sunday night workshops at Bo Diddley s became his musical refuge. Thole, now 60, suffered several complications from a childhood bout with polio, including arthritis in his back and leg and pain from a recent hip replacement. By this summer, the pain was so bad he could no longer tour with his band.

Tomorrow morning Lord Mandelson will present the Digital Economy Bill to the public, which among other things is aimed at reducing illicit file-sharing. According to parts of the bill that leaked today, the legislation could lead to jail terms for file-sharers and unprecedented power for the entertainment industries. Over the past months the UK government has tried to tackle the issue of online piracy.

Dark Helmet alerts us to the news that our good friend Lily Allen is back in the news discussing file sharing again . Tragically, it does not appear that she's used her "time off" to better understand copyright issues very much. Unlike nearly everyone else who complains about copyright infringement, she's apparently "all for" infringing on her copyrights, just so long as you pay someone -- even if it's the guy on the street selling the counterfeit CDs. Seriously: "If someone comes up with a burnt copy of

On top of that, it was difficult to see how it passed the current (though, perhaps not for long) "Bilski" test for what can be patented.

Warner Music Group Funny... isn't it, that all these companies and industry groups are supporting a deal that no one's seen yet? Oh wait... that's because many of them have seen it and actually have had a hand in creating it. But what's really damning is that no where in the letter do they explain why this is actually needed or how it will do anything valuable.

If you don't back a copyright treaty being negotiated in secret, you must want to destroy Hollywood, its blockbuster movies and all the jobs they create. At least that's the message from the Motion Picture Association of America. It's spelled out in a Thursday memo to the Senate Judiciary Committee, urging lawmakers to support the Obama administration's efforts toward negotiating an intellectual property agreement with more than a dozen countries.

Opponents of ACTA are either indifferent to this situation, or actively hostile toward efforts to improve copyright enforcement worldwide   -Dan Glickman
